Aerodynamic characteristics of trills and phonological patterning

چکیده

The present study attempts to characterize the aerodynamic conditions required for the production of apical trills and to account for some universal tendencies in the patterning of trills in terms of their aerodynamic and distinctiveness requirements. In order to ascertain the aerodynamic conditions required for trills, oropharyngeal pressure (Po) and airflow were recorded simultaneously in two subjects producing voiced and voiceless trills. The backpressure during trills was intermittently bled with catheters of varying diameter, and thus impedance. It was found that (1) voiceless trills show a higher Po and a larger rate of flow than voiced trills, which generates friction noise across the lingual constriction; (2) voiceless trills are more robust to changing aerodynamic conditions but less distinct auditorily, as inferred from acoustic data; (3) the Po and airflow conditions for voiced trills and fricatives show very similar values, with trills showing a narrower range of allowable variation. The behavior of trills in varying aerodynamic conditions accounts for observed phonological patterns: the universal preference for voiced trills, the alternation between trills and fricatives, trill devoicing, and the lack of nasal trills. r 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Prestopped bilabial trills in Sangtam

This paper discusses the phonetic and phonological features of a typologically rare prestopped bilabial trill and some associated evolving sound changes in the phonology of Sangtam, a Tibeto-Burman language of central Nagaland, north-east India. Prestopped bilabial trills were encountered in two dozen words of a 500-item corpus and found to be in phonemic contrast with all other members of the ...

On the incompatibility of trilling and palatalization: a single-subject study of sustained apical and uvular trills

The production of trills requires precise articulatory and aerodynamic settings, which appear to be hardly compatible with secondary palatalization – the raising and fronting of the tongue body. Yet, the precise reasons for this incompatibility are still poorly understood, largely given the paucity of articulatory work on trills. Moreover, previous investigations of palatalized trills have been...

An Aerodynamic Explanation for the Uvularization of Trills?

The origin of the uvular trill [ö] in the languages of Western Europe is a matter of some debate. The diachronic change from an alveolar trill to a uvular trill is widely believed to be standard and the reverse process seems unattested. The present study approaches this diachronic asymmetry by examining the aerodynamics of uvular and alveolar trills produced under laboratory conditions.

The Interaction between Contrast , Prosody , and

Russian maintains a contrast between non-palatalized and palatalized trills that has been lost in most Slavic languages. This research investigates the phonetic expression of this contrast in an attempt to understand how the contrast is maintained. One hypothesis is that the contrast is stabilized through resistance to coarticulation between the trill and surrounding vowels and prosodic positio...

Aerodynamic constraints on the production of palatalized trills: the case of the Slavic trilled [r]

Production of a trill depends on several articulatory and aerodynamic constraints. These constraints can be held responsible for various sound changes in Slavic languages which all involve depalatalization or frication of ProtoSlavic palatalized trilled r. As soon as a trill is affected by palatalization, the aerodynamic conditions are changed and the possibility of trill production lowers. Sma...
